Within the school the Atelier and the Atelierista fulfill a role different from that of the classroom teacher. The Atelierista offers another perspective on the learning that occurs in the school. The role as guide can be more active, more creative, and more varied than the regular classroom teachers. Freed from the burden of structure, the Atelierista can go where the children's ideas go and can support them to better define their dreams as well as their use of multiple languages to express their understanding of how the world works. Our children get a rich education in multiple art mediums. Even our youngest students learn to use clay and their projects are fired in our kiln. We believe all children have an artist inside them and it is our job to support them in their creative development.
We have two phenomenal Atelieristas!
Music Together is a rich, culturally diverse curriculum which supports early brain development. Children not only learn songs, but also there is lots of learning about musical elements like tone, pitch, and rhythm. We hope to develop an early love of music!
This program has been paused due to COVID but we are planning to bring it back for the 2022-23 school year.
We are blessed by Melia Warren, who is Children's minister at Hixson United Methodist Church. She comes once a month and conducts a chapel lesson with each class.
We teach children basic Bible truths such as God made you, God made your family, God loves you, and God wants us to love each other.
Hixson United Methodist Church offers many programs for the whole family - adult, children's, youth, music, and more.
This has been an exciting addition because children can create their ideas in many ways and with many tools. Our philosophy promotes children using real materials to recreate ideas and expand upon them.
STEAM skills are developed in a Maker Station. Children have daily opportunities to use these skills. They love the responsibility of using "real" tools.
We have a wind tunnel for opportunities to experiment with what will fly and what modifications increase flight. A sewing machine helps children create pillows, banners, and stuffed animals. I wonder what we might add next?
All Classes Participate in yoga once a month. Research shows children benefit in many ways from practicing yoga!. Yoga benefits children with body control, self-regulation, mindfulness and much more!
This program is currently suspended due to not having an instructor. Yoga mats and stories are available for class use.
